York 10k

York – one of my favourite cities. I was looking forward to this run especially, although the incredible heat was once again a real challenge. Fortunately the support from everyone was amazing. Both the crowds lining the streets and fellow runners were all very helpful in cheering me on, making for a wonderful experience.

I did have one minor scare though. Although it’s not serious, I am asthmatic, and always make sure I take a puff of my inhaler before any run. For some very strange reason I completely forgot, and it was only when I had already started running that I realised that I hadn’t taken my inhaler, and that it was back in the car. The psychological worry kicked in, persuading me that I was already wheezing. Fortunately I managed to control my breathing and maintain a fairly gentle pace.

As I approached the finish line area I heard a Scottish pipe band playing, and it momentarily threw me when I realised they were playing the very same moving piece of music which was played at my grandmother’s funeral a couple of years ago. However, rather than feel down I was spurred on by the thought that it was she who had bought me one of my first Star Wars figures when I was a small boy – a Stormtrooper of course, and here I was a grown man still, ahem, playing with Star Wars figures – albeit rather larger ones! I determined to make the end of the run a good one, and dedicated it to her.

The end was great, and I felt good. An amazing crowd, and a great city, and definitely a run I’ll be doing again next year.

I may be able to get some photographs of the occasion to post here later.
